David McCann

Managing Director

David has 30 years’ experience of dealing with dispute resolution. He was previously Head of Commercial Litigation and then a Senior Partner at a large multi-office north-west law firm. He then decided to set up his own practice (Hanover Law) in 2019 which has since grown and is now a successful law firm with some of the region’s top property lawyers.

The focus of Hanover Law is in dealing with all elements of real estate and development work.  David’s expertise in dispute resolution enables us to provide a full suite of contentious and non-contentious property work dealing with all elements of commercial litigation and specialises in contractual and property litigation. David has acted in a number of reported cases covering: –

  • Lease renewals under the Telecommunications Code.
  • Costs litigation.
  • Professional negligence.
  • Intellectual property.

David is our Managing Director and owner of the business; he is also the firm’s Compliance Officer and is responsible for the strategic direction and growth of the business.

Jon Mason

Head of Real Estate

Before joining Hanover Law Jon has worked for a number of international law firms and is experienced in real estate property law specialising in high value development schemes, and investment transactions including purchase, development, letting, funding and the sale of commercial, residential and mixed use property.

Jon has acted for a number of high-profile clients including;

  • A major supported living provider in relation to the purchase and sale of a number of schemes and property portfolios.
  • A major national budget retailer on the development of a new build supermarket.
  • A developer on the development of two hotel-anchored mixed-use schemes in East London.
  • A major plc housebuilder on the development of a three residential tower scheme in East London – the tallest of which is 68 floors and will be one of the tallest in Europe.
  • A North-West based residential developer specialising in social housing on a number of housing schemes in the North-West.
  • An active investor in relation to the purchase, sale and asset management of commercial and residential properties, including retail both on the open market and by auction.
  • The administrators on a multi-million-pound sale of a large former industrial site in Essex for redevelopment as light industrial units.
  • The buyers of a highly contaminated 32-hectare site comprising a former chemical plant.

Mark Balmforth

Head of Asset Management

Mark is a senior solicitor at Hanover Law and prior to joining us worked at a top-tier international firm in Manchester for a number of years following qualification. He advises institutional investors and local authorities on a wide range of commercial property matters focusing predominantly on landlord and tenant, disposals and acquisitions across the retail, industrial and office space sectors.

Mark’s recent experience includes:

  • advising landlords on a range of transactional matters across a nationwide portfolio of 12 shopping centres including anchor lettings, lease renewals and day-to-day asset management;
  • working closely with landlords and asset managers to structure the separation of standalone retail units from wider estates to facilitate capital return for investors;
  • advising on the structuring and sale of a portfolio of industrial units and working closely with the seller to resolve boundary issues, complex works conditions and potential contamination; and
  • advising landlords on significant office/industrial lettings including the expansion of a global telecoms/resourcing provider, the refurbishment and letting of a food testing laboratory and a significant government department relocation.

Mark gives effective and pragmatic advice that pinpoints the needs of clients and focuses on the key issues at hand.

Shauna Thompson

Solicitor Advocate

Shauna joined Hanover Law as a Solicitor Advocate in 2020. She is a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University and obtained her Higher Rights of Audience whilst completing her in-house training at a registered social housing provider in Manchester. Since qualifying in 2018, Shauna gained invaluable experience working at a boutique law firm in Manchester specialising in complex acquisitions and disposals for property developers as well as broader Landlord and Tenant matters.

At Hanover Law Shauna handles both contentious and non-contentious real estate work including but not limited to;

  • Dilapidation and reinstatement claims

Michaela Rezzano

Practice Manager

Michaela is the Practice Manager of Hanover Law. Her previous roles have enabled her to proactively manage the day-to-day operations of the firm.  As well as providing support to all members of staff she is also the finance assistant and legal cashier and has extensive knowledge of the Solicitors Account rules ensuring they are adhered to.

Michaela is the first point of contact and works closely with senior members of the management team.
