David McCann

Managing Director

David has 30 years’ experience of dealing with dispute resolution. He was previously Head of Commercial Litigation and then a Senior Partner at a large multi-office north-west law firm. He then decided to set up his own practice (Hanover Law) in 2019 which has since grown and is now a successful law firm with some of the region’s top property lawyers.

The focus of Hanover Law is in dealing with all elements of real estate and development work.  David’s expertise in dispute resolution enables us to provide a full suite of contentious and non-contentious property work dealing with all elements of commercial litigation and specialises in contractual and property litigation. David has acted in a number of reported cases covering: –

  • Lease renewals under the Telecommunications Code.
  • Costs litigation.
  • Professional negligence.
  • Intellectual property.

David is our Managing Director and owner of the business; he is also the firm’s Compliance Officer and is responsible for the strategic direction and growth of the business.

Mark Balmforth

Legal Director – Solicitor

As head of the asset management team at Hanover Law, Mark co-ordinates all investment, disposal and asset management work undertaken by the Hanover Law team. This includes overseeing work across the office, retail and development sectors and managing client relationships with institutional investors, ultra-high net worth individuals and local authorities.

Prior to joining Hanover Law, Mark worked at a top 20 law firm in the investment and asset management team.

Mark’s recent experience includes:-

  • managing a complicated title re-structure and 999-year pre-let of circa 60,000 sq ft to a higher education body, transforming a regional town centre;
  • acting on behalf of institutional investors to break up and sell off a number of office buildings (let and vacant) following a large portfolio acquisition;
  • managing all landlord and tenant work at the prestigious Brindleyplace estate in Birmingham, on behalf of overseas investors;
  • acting on the disposal of numerous development plots at The Airfields (part of the Northern Gateway area at Deeside, North Wales);
  • dealing with key strategic lettings at business parks across the country, to governmental departments, international occupiers and banks.

Mark gives effective and pragmatic advice that pinpoints the needs of clients and focuses on the key issues at hand.

Shauna Thompson

Senior Solicitor Advocate

Shauna is a senior solicitor advocate at Hanover Law focusing predominantly on retail matters for institutional investors and local authorities. Before joining Hanover Law in 2020, Shauna graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University and obtained her Higher Rights of Audience whilst completing her in-house training at a registered social housing provider in Manchester.

Since qualifying in 2018, Shauna gained invaluable experience working at a boutique law firm in Manchester specialising in complex acquisitions and disposals for property developers as well as broader landlord and tenant matters.

In addition to handling a wide range of retail landlord and tenant transactions, Shauna also has experience in dealing with:-

  • auction sales;
  • debt collection and enforcement;
  • dilapidations and reinstatement claims; and
  • 1954 Act procedures.

Shauna works closely with asset managers to coordinate numerous aspects of any matter to ensure a quick and efficient outcome for landlords and tenants alike.

Helen Brierley

Senior Solicitor

Helen acts mainly for institutional investors in the business and retail sectors, with a particular focus on lettings of larger office spaces. Helen joined Hanover Law in 2023, prior to which she had worked in house since 2019 for a national developer, gaining experience in residential development work and managing a small team of lawyers. She also spent a number of years working for regional and national law firms following qualification in 2014, during which she gained experience in all aspects of transactional commercial property matters.

Helen’s recent experience includes:-

  • acting on behalf of overseas investors on lettings and other ancillary asset management matters on behalf of the landlord at an office estate in Birmingham and a similar large estate in Hemel Hempstead;
  • acting on behalf of institutional investors on the disposal of standalone office buildings and development sites;
  • assisting with the disposal of development plots at The Airfields at Deeside, North Wales; and
  • acting on lettings of spaces in shopping centres and business parks to a range of occupiers, from small clothing retailers to national consultancy and IT companies.

Helen provides straightforward legal advice in an approachable manner and is confident in her ability to help her clients achieve their goals in a timely manner.

Sarah Tidswell

Assistant Solicitor

Sarah handles a range of non-contentious commercial property work at Hanover Law and focuses predominantly on office space transactions, acting on behalf of institutional investors. Prior to joining Hanover Law, Sarah spent a number of years in-house at one of the UK’s leading property developers dealing with both commercial property and residential development work. Prior to this, Sarah worked at a number of national and international across the North West.

Since joining Hanover Law in 2023, Sarah has developed a particular focus on dealing with complex re-gears and agreements for lease, often with detailed landlord works obligations and other conditions. Alongside this, Sarah handles a range of asset management work, including:-

  • new leases;
  • lease renewals;
  • surrenders and variations; and
  • short-term licences to occupy and tenancies at will.

Michaela Rezzano

Practice Manager

Michaela is the Practice Manager of Hanover Law. Her previous roles have enabled her to proactively manage the day-to-day operations of the firm.  As well as providing support to all members of staff she is also the finance assistant and legal cashier and has extensive knowledge of the Solicitors Account rules ensuring they are adhered to.

Michaela is the first point of contact and works closely with senior members of the management team.
